National Year of Dispute Resolution Travelling Parish Exhibitions Launched in Trench Town on March 4th |
|
|
| |
| Speaking at the launch of the DRF's 15th Anniversary Exhibition, held at the Trench Town Peace & Justice Centre, Ms. Sonia Gill [at left, accepting the National Year of Dispute Resolution Proclamation by the Governor-General, from the DRF's Donna Parchment Brown and Sonia Whyte], Programme Advisor of Governance, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) noted: |
|
| |
| "Under the Jamaica Violence Prevention, Peace & Sustainable Development Project, the UNDP has been supporting the DRF's work in justice, development and enhanced community safety through the Peace and Justice Centres here in Trench Town as well as at the Spanish Town Centre and the Western Dispute Resolution Centre in Montego Bay. |
| |
| "These Centres play a critical role in community and national development, providing as they do, a one-stop location for citizens for the purpose of peacemaking and mediation. Worthy of commendation is the Centres' support to the police and courts in tackling crime and violence; their responsiveness to gender issues at community level, including working with young men to address aggressive masculinity and providing access to justice for women, along with the myriad other services they provide including programmes for seniors... |
| |
| "Tackling violence and insecurity as well as citizens' access to justice are issues of good governance. Good governance and safe communities are reciprocal: where inhabitants are free from fear, and where safety is improved for citizens and neighbourhoods, interaction among people, among groups and with the public institutions improve." |
