EU/DRF “We Want Justice” Project

(EUROPEAID/128-794/M/ACT/JM EIDHR/05)

The Dispute Resolution Foundation (DRF) is the recipient of a grant from the European Union to implement a project entitled “We Want Justice” over the next two years ending in December 2011.

The overall objective of this project is to strengthen the capacity of public and private stakeholders, communities and civil society organisations in Jamaica to put structures in place for improved justice administration and the promotion of rights and democratic governance through alternative dispute resolution options, including Community & Restorative Justice Practices. One of the specific objectives of the project is to foster an enabled and shared justice environment for community cooperation within the target parishes of Clarendon, St. Catherine, St. James, Kingston & St. Andrew.

Saving money on legal disputes

Oran A. Hall, Gleaner Writer

It seems to me that settling disputes through the courts is a very costly business which can negatively affect a person's financial position, particularly the person against whom the judgement goes. Are there alternatives to litigation which could work out more favourably to all parties in a legal dispute?

COMET Project

rap session

Dispute Resolution Foundation (DRF) has entered into a contract with USAID/ Communty Empowerment and Transformation (COMET) Project to carry out 14 rap sessions with young people (15-24 years old) across Jamaica as part of their Good Governance Public Education Campaign. This project serves the purpose of encouraging the youth to become actively engaged in the process of governance and to heighten their level of awareness and knowledge of the following issues:

  • Corruption
  • Judicial, political and electoral processes
  • the role and capacity of youth in community building and transformation
  • Due process, civic responsibility and related areas

During the rap sessions participants have a chance to discuss the issues pertaining to the Campaign. They also are given an opportunity to critique the campaign materials in order for USAID/COMET to ensure that the materials they will use in the campaign are relevant and appealing to young people.
